Twenty One

“Age is strictly a case of mind over matter. If you don’t mind, it doesn’t matter.”

Yesterday was my 21st birthday.

I’m not one for drinking and partying, so my 21st was less of an event for me than most people. It was a wonderful and special day, don’t get me wrong, but for me, 21 isn’t as big of a milestone as it is for a lot of people. I have no desire to drink on a regular basis, so being 21 doesn’t really change my life or my lifestyle in any way.

The older you get, the more you realize that sometimes your birthday is just like every other day. You still have responsibilities. Not everything will go your way. But realizing that and making the most of it is how you will have a great day every single day, not just on your birthday.

It’s days like my birthday that I am reminded how many wonderful and caring people I have in my life. So many more people remembered and acknowledged my birthday than I anticipated. I have so many great people in my life and I’m thankful for all of them.

I had class in the morning yesterday, where I was greeted by a lovely number of friends wishing me a happy birthday. I loved being able to spend my day with people who care about me and that I can share laughs with. After that, I tackled my daily responsibilities, homework and such, and spent the rest of the day with my boyfriend. We hung out, ran some errands, and then he took me out to dinner. As much as I would have loved to have been with my parents on my birthday, I was fortunate enough to be able to see their faces on Skype and spend some time with them in that way.

Casual and relaxing days are my favorite days. Spending my birthday relaxing and with loved ones is the best day for me. The birthday wishes, gifts, cake, and flowers all make me happy too, but it’s the genuine love and kindness that I receive from loved ones that makes me feel special.

Thank you for all of the birthday wishes! 🎈
